Reflecting Pond

It was a beautiful, sunny day as the clouds reflected in the Reflecting Pond, a great place to sit and RELAX. Ahead is the Lincoln Memorial celebrating the life of a man who once said; “My dream is of a place and a time where America will once again be seen as the last best hope of earth.”

The Lincoln Memorial was built to honor Abraham Lincoln who was the 16th President of the United States and it is located on the western end of the National Mall. It was dedicated in 1920 to honor a man who was and remains an inspiration to us all! He said, ‘We can complain because rose bushes have thorns or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.”

Reflection

We walked around the National Mall and by the time we got to the World War II Memorial it was time to put my feet up and RELAX as I looked towards the Washington Monument!

World War II Memorial

The World War II Memorial is very impressive and gives everyone who visits it a time to pause and feel appreciation for those who sacrificed their lives for our freedoms! On the wall around the memorial there are quotes, one is from President Harry Truman, he said:

“THE HEROISM OF OUR OWN TROOPS…WAS MATCHED BY THAT OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE NATIONS THAT FOUGHT BY OUR SIDE…THEY ABSORBED THE BLOWS…AND THEY SHARED TO THE FULL IN THE ULTIMATE DESTRUCTION OF THE ENEMY.”

The White House

img_0227aWashington DC

The White House is the official residence of the President of the United States.  At the present time President Obama and his family live there.  It has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800.  I wanted to take a photo of the White House and this is as close as we could get and we aren’t sure why.  There were a lot of people coming out of the park in front of the White House, so I asked a lady what was going on and she said she didn’t know but they had evacuated the park and so she was asked to leave.  We didn’t hear of anything on the news, so, this is the best I could do.  Notice the sharp shooters (2) on the roof.

Washington Monument

img_0223WASHINGTON D. C.

The Washington Monument, an obelisk sitting almost in the center of the National Mall, was built in remembrance of George Washington the 1st President of the United States.  It is the world’s tallest obelisk, standing 554′ 7″ tall.  Construction of the monument began in 1848 and due to lack of funds it wasn’t completed until 1884.  It is surrounded by 50 flags representing each of the 50 states.

BIKES Thru My Eyes

img_0211Washington D. C.

We took the Metro into Washington DC and had a great walk around the National Mall.  The National Mall is nearly 2 miles long and over 1,000′ wide in some areas.  So, it is really large and would entail a lot of walking to do all of it.  So, we started about half way at the Washington Monument and went towards the Lincoln Memorial.  From the World War II Memorial you can see the US Capitol Building peaking up over the horizon behind the Washington Monument.

My grandson had fun at the park, not just going down the slide, but sending the frisbees down, what a great place for me to RELAX and put my feet up!

Sunset Over Baltimore

As we drove from Middle River, Maryland to Annapolis, Maryland, there was a beautiful sunset over Baltimore, I couldn’t resist taking it’s picture!

We went to dinner with some friends who we have known for over 35 years, it was so good to see them!  Our dinner at Caron’s Creekside Restaurant was delicious and it was so fun to be together with them.  Before we ate I went out on the dock and took photos of Hard Head Creek, the boats and and the beautiful scenery!

Mountain?

img_7970Baltimore, Maryland

We were driving along the freeway as the sun was setting over Baltimore.  I grabbed my camera and took this photo with the setting sun behind a mountain, or is it?  I showed it to our son, Benjamin and he knew right away what it was, because he knows there are no mountains in Baltimore.  What is it?  Well, it is a type of mountain, a mountain of salt ready for the winter.

Cheesesteak Sandwich My Style

IMG_7699acPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania

A cheesesteak sandwich is made from thinly sliced pieces of steak and melted cheese in a long roll. The cheesesteak is one of the favorite foods of Philadelphia. It can be found in most parts of the United States and is called a “Philadelphia” or “Philly Cheesesteak”. Now, when you are a vegetarian or vegan, this sandwich doesn’t work…however, I was delighted to find veggie cheesesteak sandwiches around Philadelphia and they were delicious!  On this one they added mushrooms to the spinach, onions, green peppers & marinara sauce.  The other day I had one with portobello mushrooms on it.  Just take off the cheese and it’s vegan, yummy!

Tomb of Benjamin Franklin

img_0098-70Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Across the top of Benjamin Franklin’s tomb people drop penny’s for good luck and in remembrance of his sage advice; ‘A PENNY SAVED IS A PENNY EARNED’. His tomb is very simple, just as he requested, with his wife buried next to him. Near by on a wall are some words that the young Benjamin Franklin wrote, never intending them to be used;

The Body of B. Franklin, Printer, ~ Like the Cover of an old Book, ~ Its contents torn out,  ~ And stript of its Lettering & Guilding, ~ Lies here, Food for Worms. ~ But the Work shall not be lost, ~ For it will, as he believed ~ appear once more ~ In a new & more perfect Edition ~ Corrected and improved ~ By the Author.

Independence Hall

img_0081Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

One of the nice things about Philadelphia is that all or most of the historical things are within walking distance, so after a great walk & seeing some really cool places, it was time for a sit, so I put my feet out and RELAXED!  As I did this I thought of freedom and my gratitude to all those who went before and gave so much!!  In 1776 Benjamin Franklin said, when referring to being unanimous in signing The Declaration of Independence, ‘we must hang together, or we will be pretty sure to hang separately.’

Liberty Bell

I always enjoy going to the Liberty Bell when we are in Philadelphia, is symbolizes America’s Independence.  It was made in 1752 and was originally placed in the steeple of what we now know as Independence Hall which you can see in the background, and was cast with the lettering “Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof”.  It first  cracked when rung after its arrival in Philadelphia and the crack grew over the years.  In the 1830s, the bell was adopted as a symbol by abolitionists, who called it the “Liberty Bell.”

Even the horses remind us of where we are, REMEMBERING 1776, a year that changed the world!

Independence Hall

We went on a tour of Independence Hall with a very enthusiastic tour guide.  I learned some new facts and was reminded of some old ones, namely, that Independence Hall is where both the United States Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were debated and adopted, so in other words, it is where the United States of America was born.  It was completed in 1753 and was the Capital of the United States off and on from 1776 – 1800.  It is now a part of Independence National Historical Park and is listed as a World Heritage Site.
