While on a trip to New Zealand in December of 2007, we went to Rotorua, where there is a lot of geothermal activity. There amongst the sulfur smell, boiling mud and steam were these Kakī or Black Stilts, who are a native wading bird only found in New Zealand. It is regarded by Māori as a taonga species – a living treasure.
